A POEM BY ELLEN

On Coming out of Hibernation
         (Chrysalis)
         June, 2021

Getting ready and dressed
Fix hair, sweats no
No slipper sox, yes shoes
Mask in purse
Clean body – ready for hugs
Recalling (remembering?) names of
Friends; making sense
Listen and Respond
To others not
Just what’s in my head
Did I behave appropriately?
Cut anyone off –
Oh to be out among them
Now for a nap; worn out
From overstimulation
Maybe hibernation
Wasn’t so bad

Ellen Louise Metzger (1942 -)
