May is Mental Health Awareness month. It was established as a way to raise awareness surrounding research and treatments, reduce the stigma associated with mental health, and celebrate recovery. Maintaining emotional health is essential to living well with Parkinson’s, and can help manage movement symptoms. Focusing on your strengths, nurturing caring relationships, sharing your concerns, and embracing healthy behaviors can help you better cope with the potential challenges of Parkinson’s. Visit our Emotional and Mental Health resources page or read on to learn more about resource available to support you.Mental Health ResourcesCommunity connection is a critical component to living well and contributing to positive mental health. Our Ambassadors are available to support individuals and families by providing information and advice or just by being a listening ear. Did you know that you can search Ambassadors by topic such as “Emotional and Mental Health”? Learn more and find someone to connect with today.Photo of ambassadorsSupport groups are often a key piece of maintaining connection, but deciding what to talk about every week can be challenging. If you run or are part of a support group, consider using our free downloadable Every Victory Counts® manual discussion guides to reinvigorate your meetings. Learn more about these tools in this post. Screenshot 2024-05-09 at 11After several months of collaboration and hard work, we launched a new podcast called The Parkinson’s Podcast: Unfiltered. In the first episode, co-hosts Heather Kennedy and Kat Hill discuss stigma; the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and others; and how often these stories are misguided, misleading, or simply untrue. For Your InformationIn partnership with Rune Labs, we published a blog discussing the benefits of StrivePD: an automatic tracking device capable of recording data about certain Parkinson’s symptoms (tremor and dyskinesia).   In our continued partnership with Medtronic, we published a handout on basic Parkinson’s and DBS information. You can download the PDF from the DBS hubon our website (#5 under Medtronic’s “Resources” in the accordion tab).Hispanic Community Engagement
The Parkinson’s Awareness campaign we held in conjunction with our Hispanic community throughout the month of April was very encouraging. We received over 60 testimonies from people living in Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela, among others. The invitation to the community to send us #mivictoriaconparkinson (My victory with Parkinson’s) remains open and we’ll continue posting the testimonies on our YouTube channel in Spanish. We continue to grow our Biblioteca Parkinson (Parkinson’s Library) with a new blog post about the importance of physical therapy in Parkinson’s. The notion behind this initiative is that people find reliable information on a particular Parkinson’s topic in one single place (blog post). Would you like to receive resources in Spanish? Join our Spanish Newsletter here.Hot Off the Presses:  Our 2023 Annual Report is available for you to view here. In our 20th year, we are still going strong with Davis Phinney’s original vision of giving access to resources, presenting educational programming, and providing a supportive Parkinson’s community. thrive_logo_CMYK (1)READ ARTICLEGetting moving is one of the best things you can do when living with Parkinson’s–and exercising with a community has even more benefits! Our Pedaling for Parkinson’s classes were just featured in the most recent publication of Thrive Magazine. They share how this program helps Parkinson’s communities across the nation, including what exercise can do for your physical and mental well-being.Upcoming EventsThe Victory Summit® Event – New Orleans June 1, 2024
